Helston

Helston is one of the ancient coinage towns of Cornwall where the tin ingots were taken to be weighed to assess the duty payable to the Duke of Cornwall. There is still a dignified air about this town. The main street - Coinagehall Street - runs down a fairly steep hill where the famous 'Furry, or Flora, Dance' is performed on May 8th each year. This festival has it's roots in Pre-Christian times and welcomes in a prosperous harvest for the season ahead. Helston is one of the least changed of all Cornish towns but it still manages to have all the facilities of a modern town with shops, pubs, restaurants, a sports club, and boating lake. The ever popular Flambards Village Theme Park is just on the outskirts of the town.

Just outside Helston is the Royal Naval Air Station at Culdrose. In earlier times Helston was a port at the head of the river Cober. The Loe, the lake left behind when the estuary silted up in the 13th century, is now a pretty inland lake about 2 miles south-west of the town. It is part of the National Trust's Penrose Estate and offers 5 miles of paths for glorious walks around the shore and the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall.

Helston is a good centre to visit the attractions of the Lizard peninsula. Ideal walking country with attractive small coves.
