Looe

The two Looes - East & West - are joined by a Victorian bridge, built when the 15th Century bridge of 13 arches was demolished, just below where the East and West Looe rivers meet. During the 19th Century large amounts of copper and granite were shipped from Looe, today it is a busy commercial fishing port and Shark fishing centre as well as a popular visit for holidaymakers.

West Looe is the smaller and quieter of the two. Just offshore from Hannafore beach lies Looe Island, also known as St George's Island. Home for many years of the Atkins sisters who's remarkable story is told in 'We bought an Island' and ' Tales from our Cornish Island'

East Looe is a bustling village with narrow streets leading to a pleasant sandy beach. There is a museum housed in the 15th century Guild Hall. Due to the narrow streets visitors are encouraged to park in the main carpark where there is the South East Cornwall Discovery Centre.

Shark fishing trips can be arranged for visitors as can speed boat rides in the bay and trips to Looe island which is now a bird sanctuary.

Take a train ride from Looe Station, only a few hundred yards outside the village, the Looe Valley Line runs along the picturesque wooded valley beside the river to Liskeard, possibly breaking your journey at St Keyne to visit the Magnificent Music Machines.

Other nearby attractions include the Woolly Monkey Sanctuary

Polperro

Despite the pressure of visitors this picturesque village has managed to keep it's distinctive flavour as a Cornish fishing village, with whitewashed houses along streets leading down to the harbour sheltered by 2 sea walls. Streets so narrow that traffic is banned. Like most Cornish villages Polperro has a history of smuggling and there is a museum of smuggling, but fishing has always been it's legitimate trade.
Many of the cottages appear oddly shaped as if designed to fit into the confined space. The 'House on Props' is supported on wooden stilts and overhangs the brook. A Saxon bridge crosses the river Pol.
