Launceston Click for location map (in pop up window) The hilltop remains of a Norman castle of Dunheved and its medieval town gate are reminders that Launceston once guarded the main route from Devon into Cornwall, and was the capital of Cornwall until 1835 when that honour went to Bodmin. Close to the castle, is the 16th Century church of St. Mary Magdalene which has one of the most lavishly carved exteriors of any church in England, described by John Betjeman 'a medieval triumph of Cornwall'. Narrow streets, dense with Georgian houses, surround The Square, heart of the town's shopping area. |
