The deep, narrow fjord like harbour is one of the few natural harbours to be found along Cornwall's forbiddingly rugged North Coast.
The inlet wriggles it's way to a picturesque cluster of buildings restored and preserved by the National Trust one of which is now a Museum of Witchcraft.
The village, which winds up the hill behind the harbour is still as Betjamin described it in the 1960's 'neither artified nor self-conscious' There is the Wellington Hotel at the bottom and the Napoleon at the top.
Two miles east of the village is St Juliot, where the novelist Thomas Hardy, then a young architect, restored the church in 1872.
